Although what we see on our screens may seem intangible, its infrastructure is physical and has environmental costs.
How are water and our digital consumption connected?
Every photo, email, or video we watch, upload, or download from the cloud requires massive servers and network equipment running in hyperscale data centers. These systems operate 24/7 and need large amounts of water to cool down and remain functional.
Your digital habits also shape your water footprint
When you participate on social media, interact with AI, use your email account, or watch a video online, you are using water resources. Moreover, transmitting or storing nonessential digital information results in unnecessary water use.
Some facts to keep in mind:
- A 100-word text generated by AI consumes approximately half a liter of water.
- Generating an AI image consumes about 3.45 liters of water.
- Generating or storing 1 gigabyte (GB) of data uses about 200 liters of water.
- One episode of a series is between 1.5 and 3 GB, which equals 300–600 liters of water.
- A household of four people that regularly uses Netflix, Spotify, YouTube, and internet search engines consumes between 500 GB and 1000 GB per month. Do the math—the number of liters of water required to support all that digital consumption is staggering!
- Sending a 100-word email consumes the equivalent of a 500 ml water bottle.
- A one-hour video call uses between 2 and 12 liters of water.
- Annual Bitcoin mining consumes approximately 1.6 trillion liters of water (1,600,000,000,000 liters).
- Many of the world’s leading data companies, including Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Meta, have pledged to be “water positive” by 2030.
Tips to improve your digital water footprint:
- Whenever possible, use traditional search engines instead of AI tools. They consume less water.
- Avoid including attachments in emails; replace them with a link instead.
- Delete information, images, emails, and music stored in the cloud that you no longer need. Remember, storing digital information also consumes water.
- Reduce spam whenever you can.
- Control the amount of information you post, share, and store on social networks. Don’t post unnecessary content.
- When watching series or movies on digital platforms, use a fiber optic cable connection instead of mobile data. This reduces water consumption.
- Download music to your phone instead of streaming it on YouTube or Spotify. By avoiding constant connectivity, you reduce water consumption.
